General guidelines for not going to jail.

I'm writing this article for all those people out there who are relatively new to the whole "information security" field.
Have you ever wondered about the consequences of your online activities? If the answer is yes, you're probably doing something you're not supposed to.
You're faced with a choice.
To avoid getting busted, you can either:

1. STOP DOING ILLEGAL STUFF, MATE.

2. TAKE PRECAUTIONS TO NOT GET BUSTED DOING STUFF.

Having said that, let's proceed.
Get the following lines imprinted on that wannabe-hacker brain of yours, they might just save you from spending the rest of your life taking group showers with multiple men named Tyrone.

1. DO NOT BRAG.
This is probably the most important point of them all.
Bragging is just wrong on so many levels. It makes you look like a complete idiot and a wannabe at the same time. You can never know if the person listening/reading it is a fed or any other benchwarmer working for the Government.
This includes IRL situations as well. Example, bragging to people about your hobbies.

2. DO NOT TAKE ORDERS FROM PEOPLE YOU DO NOT KNOW.
"Hi mate, i waant yer help hecking this ex-girlfriend of mine, can help?" NO.
Again, you never know if the person on the other end is working for the Government.

3. DO NOT MEET UP WITH PEOPLE YOU MET ONLINE.
This is a solid guideline I live by. I like to keep my social life and internet life separated, you should too if you don't want to wake up next to a dude everyday for the rest of your pathetic life.

4.  DO NOT BE A HERO.
Don't share your dark knowledge with anyone.
This includes exploits/detected vulnerabilities or anything you believe is illegal. Don't be a hero, you are not eradicating poverty.
Stick to the shadows, nobody cares if you're famous on an internet board or not.
I break this rule all the time, but that's simply because I know I'm not doing anything illegal. wink wink.

5. DO NOT ENTER YOUR REAL ADDRESSES IN DISCUSSION BOARDS.
Not much description is need for this one.
Try to not disclose any information regarding your real life at all if possible.

6. DO NOT TRY OUT ACCOUNTS/CARDS YOU FIND ONLINE.
You don't know who they belong to, you don't know if it's a trap.
You can never know if they were placed there with the intention of a possible bust.

7. THINK BEFORE YOU ACT.
Before you say some stupid shit online, take the time to think about the consequences.
Example, imagine a dude pissing you off on Facebook, don't sit upright on your couch and tell him you can't wait to watch his modem burn.
Don't do anything you believe can get you nicked.

 That's pretty much it.
If you still manage to get busted, you probably deserve it.
